NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2010

Dear Friends,

June has arrived, bringing the fine weather with it at last, heralding a summer of musical celebrations to treasure. A series of birthdays will give me the chance to celebrate Schumann (200th anniversary), Mahler (150th anniversary), and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival's 25th anniversary; but also, some dear friends will be joining me and making music together for my seventieth summer....

Schumann will be honored in Düsseldorf at the beginning of June (Schumann Fest), and also in Dortmund (Ruhr Klavier-Festival), Hamburg, Lübeck, and Neubrandenburg. I'll be meeting up with my dear friend and long-time musical collaborator Tzimon Barto for a series of concerts, which will give me the chance to introduce to you the Schumann program which we have recorded for Ondine, in particular the arrangement of the two large concert pieces opus 92 and opus 134 with the "Geistervariationen" as a slow middle movement. In such combination, these pieces make a kind of "imaginary piano concerto" in three movements. We will perform the same repertoire at the Salzburg Festival on August 21 and 22 with the Vienna Philharmonic. Also in June, I will be marking the end of my ten years as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It is going to be a moving farewell to my friends, the musicians of the Orchestre de Paris. The summer will continue with the wonderful orchestra of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Academy on tour in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Germany with Mahler's First Symphony and Mozart's Symphony No. 34. I am also looking forward to conducting the remarkable Czech Philharmonic in Mahler's Second Symphony "Resurrection" on July 7 in Prague, on the very day of the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth. My tour with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra will continue with more Mahler in Wiesbaden, Hamburg, and Lübeck, including two performances of the Rückert Lieder with baritone Thomas Hampson as soloist. On Sunday July 18, lots of musician friends and brilliant young talents are joining me at Salzau to celebrate my seventieth summer in music. In one exhilarating day, beginning at 11 am and lasting late into the night, nine marvelous soloists will be accompanied by me either on piano or with the SHMF Orchestra, the Sirba Octet will round off the evening concert with their delectable and rhythmical repertoire "Du Stetl à New York". By then, it will be time to join Chicago and the great Ravinia Festival where the lineup includes four concerts and in particular a Lied Recital with Matthias Goerne, an evening with Renée Fleming and Tzimon Barto, and another concert with the brilliant Leonard Elschenbroich and Erik Schumann. And I'm going to have the pleasure of playing the solo part in Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major, KV 414 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Axelrod. On August 15 we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SHMF in Kiel with a gala program and some very special guests including Midori, Matthias Goerne, and Justus Frantz. My summer will have been bursting at the seams with music, and after a few days in Salzburg it will draw to a close in Wotersen, Rendsburg, and Rellingen, with the phenomenal Matthias Goerne and three cycles of Schubert Lieder, and myself at the piano performing the Schubert B flat major Piano Sonata, D. 960.

Dear Friends, I hope our paths cross at some time during this "summer of anniversaries" so we can celebrate together and above all, celebrate music!

RECENT REVIEWS
San Francisco Chronicle, May 7th, 2010
The Second (Brahms Symphony) has rarely arrived with such a welcome rush of relief and reassurance as it did during Wednesday's San Francisco Symphony concert (...). (In) a vibrant, rich-toned account of this work (...) Eschenbach successfully resisted any temptations to inflate the musical rhetoric of the piece, keeping things light, lively and tender throughout.

ClassicsToday.com (May 2010; on a recent Mahler CD release by Capriccio)
This is (...) a lovely, fresh, and youthful-sounding Mahler First, abounding in idiomatic feeling and athmosphere.

Gramophone (June 2010; on a recent Schumann CD release by Ondine)
Eschenbach and Barto (...) make a delightful partnership in another score (the Six Etudes in Canonic Form, Op. 56) that does not merit its current neglect.
