1950 | 1960 Music Would Be my Life
- Spring 1951 - Continues piano studies under Eliza Hansen (née Ghiul) in Hamburg (until 1953) and commences violin, viola and organ studies
- 1951 - Wins First Prize in the Steinway Young Pianist Competition in Germany
- 1953 - Moves with his adoptive family from Neustadt in Holstein to Aachen, Germany, enters high school and officially adopts the name Eschenbach
- 1955 - While still at high school in Aachen, enters the Musikhochschule in Cologne, Germany to continue piano studies with Hans-Otto Schmidt-Neuhaus
- 1959 - Graduates from the Einhard Gymnasium in Aachen with the German "Abitur" and returns to Hamburg to study once again with Eliza Hansen
- 1959 - Commences conducting studies with Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg in Hamburg
